Styles seem to change as frequently as the seasons, so it can be a challenge to keep up! Don’t worry though. This week we’re featuring some of our favorite fall rugs, as well as some general design tips and tricks to help you stay cozy at home during the colder months ahead.

There’s a good reason why interior designers call fall their favorite season. The cooler weather encourages us to stay indoors and truly enjoy our spaces. It also opens up opportunities for thick blankets and fuzzy textures that really turn on the cozy factor. Meanwhile, the fresh harvest offers tons of inspiration for accent pieces. Pumpkins, gourds, apples and other fall plants are a great way to add a rustic, “homey” feel to your space.

Your autumn rugs will be the backdrop for this decor, so try to make sure they work well together! We generally like contrast to ensure our spaces are never overwhelming or too boring. This means that if you’re the type of maximalist who likes to fill every inch of your home with knick-knacks and loveseats, you might want to consider a simpler design for your rugs. On the other hand, if you plan on just placing a few things here and there, you can get away with a bolder design and make the rug the center of the room.

One of the best things about fall decorations is that nature has already chosen a color palette for you! Take cues from the changing leaves and embrace the beautiful browns, reds, oranges and yellows you see around you. Mix grays and warm, neutral tans and you’ll be well on your way to the cozy cottage vibe we all crave this time of year.

That said, you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment. Traditional fall colors will always be solid, but they can start to look a little brighter to remind you of warmer days.

The best fall rugs fully embrace comfortable textures and materials. The reason is obvious: when it’s colder outside, we want to spend more time indoors. It is important that your interior spaces can offer the warmth and comfort you desire.

Wool is the obvious material for warmth and comfort. These rugs look great all year round, but are especially welcome in the cooler fall and winter months. In fact, they also have the disadvantage of usually being more expensive than other materials.

Other popular choices include synthetic materials such as polypropylene. Nowadays, it’s easy to find synthetic rugs that rival the durability and comfort of wool. Synthetic carpets are generally available in a wider variety of textures, patterns and colors than wool carpets.

If you go this route, you’ll want to look for thick rugs and even rugs that really promote comfort in cold weather.
